Dental Director

Howard Dental Center (HDC) the nation’s pre-eminent, stand alone oral health care clinic for people living with HIV/AIDS, is seeking a visionary, inspirational, committed, and skilled individual to become the next Dental Director. This position is ideal for someone who is serious about public health work, quality clinical work, caring for underserved populations, and furthering knowledge through cutting edge education and potential research initiatives.

Status: Full-time, exempt 

Direct Supervisor: Executive Director 

Summary: Howard Dental Center (HDC) is a non-profit,  tax-exempt organization providing comprehensive and integrated oral health care to adults, youth and children living with HIV/AIDS. The Dental Director (DD), under the supervision of the Executive Director (ED) of HDC, is responsible for ensuring that HDC continues its practice of high quality and highly personalized dentistry within a public health setting. The DD will serve as the director of all clinical aspects of HDC’s work, and will function as a critically needed member of the HDC management team. The successful candidate will have a deep belief in the importance of public health, comprehensive and integrated oral health care, be a team builder and team player, and will be comfortable dividing his/her time between direct clinical work, educational and administrative responsibilities. An individual with a focus and background in solid program evaluation and research methodologies will be seriously considered for this position. 

General Duties: The DD will work with the ED, the General Board and other staff on the Management Team to plan and implement a sustainable and long-term future for HDC. The DD will directly supervise and/or delegate supervisory responsibilities with the clinical staff at HDC. The DD will direct, coordinate and perform a wide range of dental procedures, including emergency,  preventive and restorative work, as well as oral surgery and endodontic procedures associated with general practice dentistry.  

Specific Duties: 

  • Emphasize the medical management of complex patients, medically and dentally speaking, and interact with other disciplines associated with HIV care.
  • Directly supervise and/or delegate supervisory responsibilities for all clinical staff.
  • Ensure effective and efficient direction and coordination of the clinical program.
  • Coordinate provision of service with other dental providers and agencies in the community as appropriate.
  • Supervise maintenance of all OSHA criteria and record keeping, ensuring compliance with professional standards of asepsis in a clinical setting.
  • Oversee new clinical programming such as the Alternatives to Recovery (ATR)  and emergency screening programs.
  • Work as a critically needed member of the HDC Management Team to ensure high quality compassionate dental care and overall services.
  • Serve as clinical liaison and as a spokesperson for HDC to the General Board, and various HIV coalitions with whom HDC is affiliated.
  • Serve as critically needed staff member in any strategic planning or operational planning efforts.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of patient education programs.
  • Ensure that all clinical staff have ongoing educational opportunities and staff development options.
  • Attend local, regional, national and international conferences and institutes as necessary.
  • Oversee all educational programs associated with Universities or other training centers, including direct supervision of dentist and dental hygiene students
  • Oversee program education, evaluation and research efforts
